Gambaran Makna Kerja pada Petugas Pengurus Jenazah

Abstract

Working is not just for earning a living. There are three concepts of the meaning of work, namely that work is 
interpreted as a job, a career, or a calling. Anyone can understand the meaning of this job, including corpse handlers. The 
job of corpse handlers is not a common one to choose. Work encompasses three concepts: job, career, and calling. Corpse 
handlers face various physical and psychological risks, including infection, traumatic stress, and uncertain working hours. 
This research aims to describe the meaning of work for corpse handlers, considering the various risks faced by these 
workers. The job of corpse handlers is not a common choice, and the meaning of work can be owned by anyone, including 
corpse handlers. This research is a qualitative-phenomenological study, with the sampling technique used is non-random 
sampling, with the type of purposive sampling and snowball sampling. The method of data collection used observation 
techniques and in-depth interviews with 4 male informants who had worked for more than 7 years as corpse management 
officers. This study provides the result that the description of the meaning of work for the four informants initially varied 
according to the interests of the interviewees at the beginning of working as corpse handler, and continued with the 
meaning of work as a career, until finally interpreting the work of corpse handler as a calling or calling and job. The 
interpretation of the meaning for the corpse management officer is dynamic because it adapts to the factors that occur 
and influences the life of the resource persons. For further research, it is expected to involve female informants who work 
as caretakers of corpses, and informants who work in hospitals as corpse handler.
