Abstract

Cigarettes have a negative impact on health. Currently, quite a few underage people are exposed to the dangers of smoking. Today's fast information and communication media play an important role in facilitating access to information, especially regarding advertisements for cigarettes and tobacco products. Cigarette advertising is very profitable for mass media and electronic media, in addition to generating many negative opinions. Restrictions on cigarette advertising have been implemented even though the level of cigarette consumption in Indonesia is still quite high. Singapore is one of the countries that strictly limits cigarette advertising. Singapore has special regulations regarding the prohibition of promotion, advertising and sponsorship of tobacco products. This comparison aims to provide an alternative solution in reconstructing the law regarding restrictions/prohibitions on advertising content related to cigarettes. The results of the research in this paper are that Indonesia has implemented restrictions on cigarette products but is still subject to sectoral regulations, which is different from Singapore which has comprehensively regulated restrictions on the prohibition of advertising of tobacco products. Alternative solutions that can be offered in this paper include reducing cigarette advertising to the point of banning it on television and radio broadcasts, then limiting cigarette advertising on social media, both application and website-based, and prohibiting advertising and displaying tobacco products that children can access.
