Implementation of Medical Waste Management in Hospitals Applying the Green Hospital Concept

Medical waste generated from hospital service activities poses high risks to environmental sustainability and public health due to its hazardous nature. Although regulations concerning the management of hazardous and toxic waste (B3) have been established within the Indonesian legal system, the implementation of medical waste management oriented toward eco-friendly principles has not yet been optimally realized. This research aims to examine the implementation of medical waste management in a hospital adopting the Green Hospital concept, specifically at RSUD Bendan, Pekalongan City, and to analyze the compliance of its medical waste management with environmental and health laws and regulations. This research employs a qualitative approach with an empirical juridical method. Primary data were obtained through semi-structured interviews with environmental health officers at RSUD Bendan, Pekalongan City, while secondary data were gathered through literature reviews and analysis of laws and regulations, with data validity maintained through triangulation techniques. The results indicate that RSUD Bendan has implemented medical waste management stages in accordance with legal provisions and Green Hospital principles, including waste segregation at the source, packaging and labeling, temporary storage in hazardous waste facilities (TPS B3), routine transportation, and collaboration with licensed third parties for the disposal process. The hospital also implements various environmental management programs, such as energy efficiency, resource usage monitoring, and waste recycling activities. However, several obstacles remain in its implementation, such as sub-optimal waste segregation, inconsistent compliance with Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs), and low environmental awareness among some healthcare personnel.
