The Role of the Family, Parenting Styles, and Children's Interest in Learning

Abstract

The family serves as the primary and most fundamental environment for shaping a child's character and interest in learning. Parental involvement is crucial, as parents act as both role models and guides in their children's learning activities. However, technological advancements and the dynamics of modern life can sometimes diminish parental attention toward their children's education, leading to a situation where their role is supplanted by the unsupervised use of digital devices. This shift can affect a child's learning motivation and engagement, ultimately impacting academic achievement and the development of social skills. This study aims to theoretically examine how parental roles and family factors influence a child's interest in learning through a literature review. A descriptive qualitative approach was employed, analyzing scholarly articles, journals, books, and relevant literature regarding parenting styles, the family environment, emotional support, and the factors that either facilitate or hinder a child's interest in learning. The findings indicate that active parental involvement—such as guiding study sessions, creating an enjoyable learning atmosphere, providing motivation, and ensuring adequate learning resources—positively influences a child's interest in learning. Furthermore, family conditions—including emotional stability, the prevailing learning culture, family structure, the physical home environment, and technology management—can either reinforce or impede a child's learning motivation. The study highlights the importance of optimizing parental roles and strengthening the family environment as strategies to holistically enhance the quality of a child's education, encompassing academic performance, character development, and social skills.
