Abstract

This research attempts to identify and analyze the translation techniques used by Abu Muhammad Al-Hadziq in translating jumlah ismiyah found in the book Al-Akhlaq Lil-Baniin. The book is a moral education text widely used in Islamic boarding schools and Islamic educational institutions. Therefore, the quality of its translation greatly influences readers understanding and internalization of moral values in the recipient language. For that reason, an examination of the translation techniques employed is important to examine the extent of equivalence, clarity of meaning, and readability of the translated text. This study employs a qualitative descriptive method using the translation technique framework proposed by Molina and Albir (2002) as the basis of analysis. The data consist of linguistic units in the form of jumlah ismiyah taken from the Arabic original text and the Indonesian translated text. Data were collected through document study techniques, while data analysis involved data reduction, classification of translation techniques, data presentation, and conclusions drawing. Data validity was established through careful analysis and consistent application of the theoretical framework. The findings show that from forty data items analyzed, nine translation techniques were identified, namely modulation (27.5%), established equivalence (22.5%), amplification (12.5%), reduction (10%), transposition (10%), generalization (7.5%), particularization (5%), calque (2.5%), and variation (2.5%). Modulation emerged as the most dominant technique, indicating the translator’s tendency to alter perspectives or modes of expression to accommodate the message to the cultural context and linguistic conventions of the target language. The relatively high use of established equivalence reflects the translator’s effort to maintain terms that are already familiar and commonly accepted by Indonesian readers. In general, the analysis demonstrates that the translator does not merely transfer meaning at the lexical level but also takes into account structural, functional, and cultural aspects. This method produces a translation that achieves communicative and functional equivalence while preserving the moral messages contained in the source text. This research highlights the importance of selecting appropriate translation techniques in translating religious and educational texts in order to maintain semantic equivalence, readability, and acceptability for target language readers across various educational contexts. This contributes to improving translation studies practice.
