The Effect of Using TikTok in Improving Students’ Speaking Skills

Abstract

Speaking is important for communication and is one of the basic language skills that an English learner must master. Being able to speak English is very important as it is the most widely spoken language in the world. This study aims to determine the effect of using TikTok application on the speaking ability of 8th grade students. This study used quasi-experimental design and quantitative method. The researcher has chosen two classes as sample. They are control class and experimental class. This study focused on determine the effect of using TikTok in improving students’ speaking skills. In the data collection technique, the researcher gave a monologue of students’ speaking test in pre-test and post-test.  The researcher has found the result of Sig. (2-tailed) value of 0.001 < 0.05 through the Paired Sample T-test. Therefore, it can be concluded that the use of TikTok is a learning media that has an effect to improve students' speaking skills. TikTok can also be used as an alternative in teaching speaking, as it can improve students' grades and provide an interesting learning experience.
