Donald Trump has slammed Nancy Pelosi for rejecting the White House's offer to provide Congress with rapid coronavirus testing and demanded she 'come back to Washington now'.

The president launched into a Twitter rant against the House Speaker Saturday  evening after she and Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell turned down his offer that all members would get the '5 minute Abbott Test' for COVID-19, just days after he accused Pelosi of canceling the House's return because she is 'enjoying [her] vacation'.

'No reason to turn it down, except politics. We have plenty of testing. Maybe you need a new Doctor over there,' he blasted.

'Crazy Nancy will use it as an excuse not to show up to work!'

Trump tried to back up his angry outburst by retweeting a post McConnell uploaded almost two months ago.

'The time is now for all Americans to engage in basic common-sense measures, and for Americans at heightened risk to take additional precautions. The experts' detailed recommendations for individuals, families, and employers are available online at website McConnell's original post dated March 10 read.

The baffling retweet followed another tweet sent Saturday afternoon where the president also took aim at Pelosi, attacking her with his nickname for her 'Crazy Nancy'.

In the first tweet he told Pelosi 'she should come back to Washington now' and said the 'impeachment hoax will be exposed'.

'The Impeachment Hoax will be exposed. Crazy Nancy gets Nothing Done, that's why she got thrown out as Speaker the first time. Also, she should come back to Washington now!' Trump tweeted, alongside a link to a TV show called 'The Ukraine Hoax' airing on far-right news channel One America News tonight.

The president's anger came as Pelosi and tour shangrila McConnell turned down the White House's offer to provide Congress with rapid coronavirus testing Saturday, ahead of the Senate returning Monday.

The House Speaker and Senate Majority Leader said they were 'grateful' for the offer but the resources should be sent to people battling the pandemic on the frontline first.

'Congress is grateful for the Administration's generous offer to deploy rapid COVID-19 testing capabilities to Capitol Hill, but we respectfully decline the offer at this time,' McConnell and Pelosi said in a joint statement.

'Our country's testing capacities are continuing to scale up nationwide and Congress wants to keep directing resources to the front-line facilities where they can do the most good the most quickly.'

The two congressional leaders said lawmakers and congressional staff will instead use 'current testing protocols that the Office of the Attending Physician has put in place until these speedier technologies become more widely available.'

The Office of the Attending Physician issued new guidelines for returning senators Friday including recommending all staffers wear face coverings and that offices limit staff numbers and telework where possible.

Trump announced Saturday morning that there was 'tremendous testing capacity' available for senators returning to Washington and that all Congress members would get a coronavirus test that takes just five minutes.

He also slammed reports that Congress has been slow to reopen because members cannot get tested for coronavirus, blaming Pelosi for the delay.

'There is tremendous coronavirus testing capacity in Washington for the senators returning to Capital Hill on Monday. Likewise the House, which should return but isn't because of Crazy Nancy P,' Trump tweeted Saturday morning.

'The 5 minute Abbott Test will be used. Please inform Dr. Brian P. Monahan,' he added.

However, Monahan, the Capitol's attending physician, told top Republican officials in a conference call Thursday there is not sufficient testing capacity for senators, two people familiar with the matter told Politico.

Trump's offer came as the Senate is scheduled to return to session Monday while the House Democrats abandoned plans to return the same day, citing Monahan's advice that it was too much of a health risk.

Many senators are said to be anxious about the decision to return Monday, as it coincides with Washington nearing its peak for the pandemic and many of them fall into a more vulnerable age category for contracting the virus.

Sixty-seven of the 100 senators currently serving are 60 or older, and another large subset are approaching their 60s.

California Democrat Dianne Feinstein and Iowa Republican Chuck Grassley are the oldest sitting senators at 86-years-old, and four others are also in their 80s.

Some senators have suggested they might not return next week, especially if the upper chamber is not taking up any coronavirus relief legislation.

'I don't begrudge a senator expressing their personal concerns, but that shouldn't mean that the entire Senate ceases to function,' Republican Senator John Cornyn of Texas said Thursday.

'We're going to try really very hard to make sure everybody is safe. And not exposed.'

Pelosi announced the House would not be reconvening Tuesday saying she 'had no choice'.

'We had no choice. The Capitol physician recommends that we not come back and we have to take that guidance in consideration for the safety of those who have to be here: press, staff, members of Congress, members' staff in addition to our own staff,' Pelosi said.

Trump had a different take, telling reporters that Democrats are 'enjoying their vacation.'

'Yeah, I think they are, I think they are,' Trump said. 'Look at Nancy Pelosi eating ice cream on late night television, yeah I think they probably are having a good time.'

The White House has come under fire for what is seen to be favorable access to testing compared to Congress.

At the White House, anyone meeting with the president or Vice President Mike Pence is administered a rapid test, where results are available within minutes.

Even members of the press have received testing before being allowed in the same room as Trump and Pence for briefings.
