* Shane Patton, 58, will take charge of Victoria Police, 42 years after joining it.

HIS PROGRESSION

* 1978: Becomes a police cadet

CAREER HIGHLIGHTS

* Oversaw the creation of a Counter Terrorism Command and a unit monitoring radicalised persons of interest after being promoted to Specialist Operations Deputy Commissioner.

* State Police Commander in charge of counter-terrorism operations in Victoria, such as the intercepted plot to carry a suicide attack in Federation Square and the attempted hijacking of a Malaysian Airlines flight

* Established teams including a drone unit, a gang crime squad and to tackle illicit firearms

* Appointed Acting Chief Commissioner on six separate occasions from 2016 to 2019, which included the response to a November 2018 attack in Melbourne that killed one person

* State Emergency Response Coordinator during the Hazelwood Mine Fires

* Led the Traffic Camera Division that oversaw the introduction of point-to-point speed detection systems in Victoria

* Recipient of the National Police Service Medal, National Medal 2nd Clasp, and the Victoria Police Service Medal for 35 years' service.

* Awarded the Australian Police Medal in 2014
