The child stars of Modern Family leave sitcom as adults after 11 years

It came on the air in September 2009.

And 11 years later, Modern Family is bidding its loyal fans a farewell in a two-part finale set to air Wednesday night on ABC.

Over its run, viewers have watched the show's child stars literally grow up in front of their eyes as they transitioned through their teenage years towards adulthood.

Both Sarah Hyland and Ariel Winter, who play sisters Haley and Alex Dunphy, have become red carpet staples in their own right thanks to the fame they found on the hit sitcom.

And each has evolved their own sense of style as well as embarked on their first real-life, as well as on-screen, romances.

Sarah was 18 when she was cast in the sitcom after a handful of minor roles starting from age six.

Now 29, she got engaged last summer to boyfriend Wells Adams who made his name on ABC's reality shows The Bachelorette and Bachelor in Paradise.

Ariel, 22, was just 11 years old when Modern Family premiered.

In 2012, she made headlines after her older sister Shanelle Workman successfully petitioned for guardianship of the young actress, alleging their mother had been physically and emotionally abusive.

Also growing up on screen was Nolan Gould, who plays Luke Dunphy, the brother of Haley and Alex.

He started doing commercials when he was three and was 11 when he got the part of Luke in Modern Family.  

Rico Rodriguez who plays Manny Delgado was also 11 when he signed on for the sitcom while Aubrey Anderson-Emmons was four when she joined the cast in season 3 as Lily Tucker-Pritchett.

The way they were: Sarah shared this throwback photo from the early days of Modern Family to her Instagram and wrote: 'I will miss these people tremendously' 

Parting ways: Sarah also shared this recent snap showing her with Ariel and Nolan and adding that they had, over the years, become 'a real life #modernfamily'

Ed O'Neill starred as the patriarch Jay Pritchettt in Modern Family with Sofia Vergara as his new wife Gloria Delgado.

Jay's daughter Claire is married to Phil Dunphy, played by Ty Burrell, and they are the parents of Haley, Alex and Luke.

Manny Delgado is Gloria's son and Jay's stepson while Jay's son Mitchell, played by Jesse Tyler Ferguson, is married to Eric Stonestreet's Cameron Tucker.

Following a retrospective A Modern Farewell, starting at 8 p.m. on ABC, the two part finale sets out to pull together the story of the blended family.

According to ABC's official synopsis, 'Mitchell and Cam settle in on their new normal, and Phil and Claire decide that one of the kids needs to move out in order to take control of the house again. Meanwhile, as Gloria becomes more successful at work, she notices Jay, Manny and Joe don't seem to need her as much.'

'In Part 2 of the series finale, the entire family discovers saying goodbye is much harder than it seems.'
