Exercises in learning used by students usually carried out from worksheet or textbooks that largely lack of critical thinking skills. Critical thinking required in constructing knowledge and it is one of Higher Order Thinking Skills (HOTS). The HOTS is needed in the formation of students' conceptual system. One way to sharpen students’ critical thinking skills is use cognitive assessment instrument based HOTS. This study aims to know the influence of cognitive assessment instrument based HOTS toward students’ critical thinking skills in buffer and hydrolysis chapters. The method use in this study is experimental study methods. Experimental and control class in this study was determined by cluster random sampling. The study design was use a Post-Test Only Control Design. Data collection methods include test and questionnaire methods. Based on the hypothesis test of critical thinking results  rpbis of the buffer is 0.8872 and rpbis of hydrolysis chapter is 0.8773. They include a strong category. So coefficient of determination is equal to 78.7% for the buffer chapter and 77% for the hydrolysis chapter. The results shows that the experimental class is better than the control class. The conclusion from these results that using of cognitive assessment instrument based HOTS toward students' critical thinking skills.
