Abstract

The purpose of this research are: (1) testing and analyzing the effectiveness of problem-based learning to problem-solving ability and students' metacognition (2) analyzing the problem-solving ability based on goal orientation, and (3) analyzing students’metacognition based on goal orientation. This research used mixed method study with concurrent embedded design. Subject of research are students of 10th graders. The results showed that the problem solving ability of students on problem-based learning is complete. Problem solving ability of student and students' metacognition on problem based learning more than students on conventional learning and increased. Students with mastery goal orientation (mastery goal) achieved all of indicators of problem solving with fewer errors andcarry out do steps of Polya’ problem solving. Students with a performance goal orientation (performance goal) cannot reach some indicators of problem solving and trouble to plan, carry out plan and looking back is often not done. Students with mastery goal orientation have knowledge of cognition and regulation of cognition was good whereas students with a performance goal orientation lacking in knowledge of cognition and regulation of cognition is not good.
