Practicality of ethnomathematic learning instruments on fraction materials for elementary school students

The result of preliminary study in Nawa Kartika Elementary School were known
that learning tends to still use expository learning model whose learning activity was
dominated by teachers, 80% of students have not been able to apply mathematics concept to
solve the literacy problem, and student's appreciation toward local culture was still low. The
purpose of this study is to analyze the practicality of learning instruments of ethnomathematics
on fraction materials to improve mathematics literacy and reduce students' mathematics
anxiety. Development of learning instruments in this research using Borg and Gall model with
four main steps: preliminary study, planning, test and validation, and dissemination. Learning
instruments are syllabus, lesson plan, students' worksheet, module, mathematics literacy test
instrument, and mathematical anxiety questionnaire. The subjects of the experiment were 4th
grade students of NU Nawa Kartika Elementary School in Kudus Regency, Indonesia. The
practicality of the learning instruments was assessed using student and teacher response
questionnaire. Student response data indicate that 84.3% of students responded positively. The
average of teacher questionnaire response to the learning instruments is 4.2 including the good
category. Teacher skills in managing learning in excellent category with an average score of
4.31. These results indicate that the learning instruments of ethnomathematics on fractional
material for elementary school students developed are considered practical to use.
