Analysis of mathematical literacy in discovery learning approach to realistic-saintific

Discovery learning (DL) emphasizes the discovery of previously unknown concepts
or principles, problems faced by students being engineered by teachers. The scientific approach
through the DL model is one way to improve the logical, analytical, and systematic thinking of
students in mathematics subjects so that it is expected to foster students' literacy skills. In the
previous research it was concluded that with DL model realisitic approach can improve the ability
of mathematical communication, so that the researcher wants to combine how the quantitative
study of DL learning with scientific-realistic approach. Mathematical Literacy (ML) is the ability
to formulate, apply and interpret mathematics in various contexts, including the ability to do
mathematical reasoning and use concepts, procedures, and facts to describe, explain or predict
phenomena of events. This type of research is quantitative research. The study design used a
pretest-posttest control group design. The population in this study is all students of class VII
Teuku Umar Junior High School Semarang in the academic year 2016/2017. Sample in this
research using simple random sampling technique selected two sample that is class VII 1 as
experiment class is subjected to DL approach of realistic-scientific approach and VII 2 as control
class with DL approach with scientific approach. The design of the experimental learning test
with quasi-experimental design with pretest-posttes control group design. Mathematical literacy
content is the shape and space of square and rectangular material. This study aims to determine
the quality of learning DL approaching realistic-scientific. Analysis of effectiveness data with
LM proportionality test and difference test of mean of two mean. Analysis of LM increase data
and character with normalized Gain test. The results showed that the validation of learning tools,
student responses, student activeness, and the ability of teachers to manage learning categorized
very well. Learning DL-realistic-scientific approach is said to be effective and can increase LM
students. So learning DL is a realistic quality approach.
