This case study aimed to explain the comparison of hedges in the English and Indonesian graduate programs theses abstracts. The qualitative analysis was undertaken into five sub-research questions to find out the English department's hedges, the Indonesian department's hedges, the similarities and differences between both and its consequences. The analysis was employed based on the taxonomy of Hyland (1998) manually. The sample was thirty master’s thesis abstracts of graduate students from the English and Indonesian graduate programs Universitas Negeri Semarang, published from 2018 to 2022 and accessed through an online library. The finding reveals that hedging functions such as writer-oriented hedges, accuracy-oriented hedges, and reader-oriented hedges are realized in English, and Indonesian thesis abstracts are mostly similar. Besides, the analysis finds some differences. One of them is the similar term employed to reach different hedging pragmatic functions. The study's finding concludes that the English graduate program tends to use writer-oriented hedges more, expressing the unwillingness of the writers to be seen entirely in their propositions. In contrast, the Indonesian graduate program tends to engage the readers by utilizing reader-oriented hedges more often than English graduate program students.
2021-12-15T00:00:00+07:00 ##submission.copyrightStatement## https://journal.unnes.ac.id/sju/jed/article/view/68304 Themes and Thematic Progression ELT Forum-JET Journal Articles 2023-05-04T04:42:44+07:00 Sedhah Widuri Arientarini [email protected] Sri Wuli Fitriati [email protected] Widhiyanto Widhiyanto [email protected]
This research aims to identify the types of Themes and Thematic Progressions in the daily posts raised by the ELT Forum-JET UNNES, to analyze Constant theme patterns, Zig-zag patterns, and Multi-Theme patterns that create Themes and Thematic Progressions. It is used in the daily posts raised by the UNNES ELT-JET Forum, To describe the methods and consistency used in improving reading in the daily posts by the UNNES ELT-JET Forum. In analyzing the development of reading in daily posts, researchers only focus on the introductory paragraph because most people describe general topics in that section, which is where the essence of the daily post will explain in that section. It is a descriptive qualitative design. Researchers analyzed thematic growth to investigate the thematic progress type in student daily posting reading, describe the realization of thematic progress in student daily reading writing, and determine the alibi of using thematic growth in student reading writing. Sources of information are from reading research proposals made by students majoring in English at specific academies. This research will focus on assessing students' daily posts published in the ELT Forum-JET (Unnes Journal of English Teaching).

The subjects of this research were 3 S1 students at Semarang State University. They majored in learning English. Based on research results is about thematic growth in daily posts. As determined by Eggins, themes, and poems are classified into three types; KTP, SLP, and DTP. Researchers did not explain the classification of themes and rhemes in this research because the main point is the development of themes. Based on the results of the information that the researchers collected, the students' method of compiling themes and rhymes in their journal posts is as follows. Most of their writings are Fair and Poor levels. There is no consistency in just one thematic development. There are no readings that do not have a thematic development pattern. The author arranges themes and rhemes in his journal posts found through several interview questions described above. The participants of this research were three students who had already graduated. Based on the results of the information that the researchers collected, the students' method of compiling themes and rhymes in their journal posts is as follows. Most of their writings are Fair and Poor levels. There is no consistency in just one thematic development. There are no readings that do not have a pattern of thematic development.
2021-12-15T00:00:00+07:00 ##submission.copyrightStatement## https://journal.unnes.ac.id/sju/jed/article/view/65976 The The Impact of Flouting Grice Maxims toward Communication Purpose Used by The Main Characters of Mr. Iglesias the American TV Series 2023-05-04T09:51:35+07:00 Billy Ardy Dwiwiyanto [email protected] Januarius Mujiyanto [email protected] Sri Wuli Fitriati [email protected]
Cooperative Principle (CP) plays an important role in communication since it can guide people to achieve meaningful communication without misunderstanding. In reality, people do not always obey the rule or maxims of Cooperative Principle when they are having a conversation. The speakers sometimes deliberately flout the maxims because they want to convey the implicit meaning behind their utterances. The point of this research is to explain the flouting of maxims during the conversations in Mr. Iglesias TV series. Besides, this research also tries to discuss the impact of flouting maxims. This research is conducted by using a descriptive qualitative method based on the theory of Cooperative Principle proposed by Grice (1975). The data are in the form of utterances used by the main characters in Mr. Iglesias TV series. The findings reveal that there are four types of flouting maxims used by the characters, namely flouting maxim of quantity, flouting maxim of quality, flouting maxim of relation, and flouting maxim of manner. Besides, I also found the impacts of flouting maxims toward communication purpose such as creating humor, producing figurative language, and expressing emotions. In conclusion, the flouting maxims occur because it is one of the ways to make communication goes smoothly.
2021-12-15T00:00:00+07:00 ##submission.copyrightStatement## https://journal.unnes.ac.id/sju/jed/article/view/66130 Teacher’s Verbal and Non-verbal Language in Teaching Narrative Text Reading Comprehension through KWL Strategy to Deaf Students 2023-05-19T00:44:53+07:00 Franciska Xaveria Kurniawati [email protected] Suwandi Suwandi [email protected] Abdurrachman Faridi [email protected]
This study aimed at investigating the teacher’s verbal and non-verbal language during the reading comprehension class. This study used descriptive evaluative study in which all exercises were analysed toward revised Bloom’s taxonomy as well as Merdeka Curriculum. The analysis also examined the Merdeka Curriculum toward revised Bloom’s taxonomy. The results of the study showed that the formative assessments in the form of exercises provided by the textbook have successfully facilitated the cognitive process and knowledge dimensions from revised Bloom’s taxonomy. It was reflected on the analysis that showed that the exercises were arranged hierarchically following from the simple instruction to the complex instructions in each chapter of the textbook. Moreover, the formative assessment as realized in the textbook exercises have already compatible with the Merdeka curriculum especially in fulfilling the learning objectives of Xth grade. As the textbook is designed for Xth throughout the semester, every chapter of the textbook has already consisted of assessments evaluating the student’s listening, speaking, reading, viewing, writing, and presenting skills holistically. Regarding the evaluation of the Merdeka Curriculum toward revised Bloom’s taxonomy, the finding confirmed that cognitive process and knowledge dimensions of Revised Bloom’s taxonomy were reflected in all language competences from the learning objectives stated in Merdeka curriculum for Xth grade of senior high school. It is advised for the exercise designer to employ an appropriate level of the updated Bloom's taxonomy to achieve the learning objectives in order to create an activity that may represent the curriculum's learning objectives.
2021-12-15T00:00:00+07:00 ##submission.copyrightStatement## https://journal.unnes.ac.id/sju/jed/article/view/68673 The Use of Hedges in Editorials in the Jakarta Post 2023-05-22T00:20:07+07:00 Sri Purwantini [email protected]
Hedges are important in the newspaper, and the use of hedges in Editorial has been paid more attention.
