Abstract

Results of literature study showed that assessment of higher order thinking skills has been used rarely, so it is necessary to develop it. Higher order thinking skills consist of application, analysis, synthesis, and evaluation. This research focused on the lowest level of higher order thinking skills: application. Instruments of metacognitive self-assessment used to measure student application thinking skills in reading English scientific text. This Research and Development (R & D) research consisted of preliminary study, development study, and evaluation phase. In the preliminary study phase, author conducted literature study. In the development study phase, author conducted product design, expert validation, and trial in small group. Evaluation phase consisted of trial in large group and final product. Based on the research and development process, it can be concluded that metacognitive self-assessment developed is valid and reliable, and it can be used to measure application thinking skills in reading English scientific text.
