Abstract

Human rights violations, including violence, intolerance, and discrimination, persist within university communities, underscoring the need for systematic education to foster awareness and advocacy. To empower students to prevent and advocate human right violations, lecturers of Universitas Muhammadiyah Malang (UMM) launched the Human Rights Friendly Campus (HRFC) program in 2024/2025, supported by the Internal Community Service Program (PPMI) and partnerships with key stakeholders, including the Center for the Study of Civilization and Human Rights and the Indonesian Consortium of Human Rights Lecturers (SEPAHAM Indonesia).  Central to this initiative is the Human Rights Defender School, designed to provide students with philosophical, legal, and practical knowledge of human rights and advocacy. Utilizing adult learning methodologies and a student-centered learning (SCL) framework, the program actively engaged 40 student activists, focusing on participatory education through discussions, debates, advocacy skills trainings and tutorials as well as field trip. The program achieved significant outcomes, including improved participant understanding of human rights, the development of a tailored curriculum for student activists, and the formation of an ad-hoc Human Rights Defender Community under UMM’s Student Executive Body. These results highlight the program’s success in bridging knowledge gaps and fostering a culture of advocacy within the campus. This initiative demonstrates the potential for higher education institutions to integrate human rights education into their academic frameworks, promoting inclusive and respectful campus environments. With its replicable model, the HRFC program provides a strategic approach to cultivating human rights awareness and advocacy, positioning universities as pivotal actors in advancing human rights values.

Author Biographies

  • Cekli Setya Pratiwi, Faculty of Law, Universitas Muhammadiyah Malang

    Doctor Cekli Setya Pratiwi is an Associate Professor at the Faculty of Law, University of Muhammadiyah Malang (UMM). She holds an LL.M. degree from Utrecht University, a Master of Comparative Law from J.R. Clark Law Schools, BYU, and a PhD from IHRP Mahidol University. Her expertise is in international human rights law, comparative constitutional law, and socio-legal studies. Doctor Pratiwi has published extensively in reputable journals and books, including Sharia & Human Rights: A Coursebook. In 2024, her book Hukum dan HAM: Teori dan Studi Kasus earns a national award from the National Library of the Republic of Indonesia. Beyond academia, Doctor Pratiwi serves as the International Academic Advisor of the Oxford Program on Law and Religion, the Secretary General of SEPAHAM Indonesia, and an external expert for Komnas HAM. She has been invited to speak in seminars in several countries and actively contributes to capacity-building programs and international forums, advancing human rights discourse and fostering global collaboration.

  • Sidik Sunaryo, Faculty of Law, Universitas Muhammadiyah Malang

    Prof. Dr. Sidik Sunaryo graduated with a Bachelor of Law (SH), a Master of Sociology (MSi) and a Master of Humanities (MHum) from the Faculty of Law UMM and obtained a Doctorate in Law from Brawijaya University. His expertise includes the criminal justice system, sociology of law, research methods, and corruption crimes. Together with Dr. Pratiwi, Prof. Sidik consistently conducts research on judicial decisions in Indonesia. Prof. Sidik is a prolific writer and has produced many written works, both academic journals and books. He is also active as a speaker in both national and international seminars, including the 2016 Annual Symposium, International Centre for Law and Religion Studies, J. Reuben Clark Law School, Brigham Young University, USA, and the Social and Humaniora Research Symposium (SoRes 2018).
