1. Purpose of the Policy
This policy is established to ensure that the use of Generative Artificial Intelligence (GenAI) is conducted ethically, transparently, and in accordance with academic standards throughout the processes of manuscript preparation, review, and publication in the JMEL: Journal of Mechanical Engineering Learning.
2. Scope
This policy applies to all authors, editors, reviewers, and any individuals involved in the publication process within JMEL.
3. Principles of GenAI Use
- GenAI may be used as an assistive tool, not as a substitute for the author’s academic expertise.
- The use of AI must not violate publication ethics, reduce originality, or generate invalid research data.
- Authors hold full responsibility for the authenticity, accuracy, and integrity of their manuscripts.
4. Permitted Uses of GenAI
GenAI may be used for the following purposes:
- Language editing, grammar refinement, and improvement of writing style.
- Non-substantive summarization or paraphrasing.
- Drafting basic structural outlines of manuscripts.
- Textual analysis that does not manipulate or fabricate research data.
5. Prohibited Uses of GenAI
The following uses are strictly prohibited:
- Generating research data, simulations, or empirical findings not derived from actual research.
- Producing the majority or entirety of the manuscript using AI without meaningful scholarly contribution from the author.
- Creating fabricated citations or fictitious references.
- Any form of plagiarism resulting from AI-generated outputs.
6. Disclosure Requirements
Authors are required to provide a clear disclosure of AI use in the Acknowledgments. Example statement:
“The authors used a Generative AI tool (e.g., ChatGPT, Gama, Jenni AI, Copy.ai, Jasper.ai, Gemini, Quillbot, DeepAI, Grammarly, Scite, Elicit, SciSpace AI, Rytr, Frase, Paperpal)) in a limited capacity for language editing without influencing the scientific substance of this article.”
7. Ethical Responsibilities
Authors must ensure that the use of AI does not violate copyright, data privacy, confidentiality, or academic ethical standards.
8. Actions for Policy Violations
Violations of this policy may result in:
- Mandatory revision,
- Manuscript rejection, or
- Retraction of the article if violations are discovered post-publication.
9. Policy Revision
This policy will be periodically reviewed and updated in alignment with advancements in AI technology and evolving ethical guidelines in academic publishing.
