Abstract

This study investigates the effectiveness of using novels to improve the maharah al-qira'ah (Arabic reading skill) of students at SMP-SMA IT Bangkinang Islamic Boarding School. The research was motivated by the low reading proficiency of students caused by limited learning media and the dominance of grammar-oriented instruction that provides insufficient reading practice. This study employed a quantitative approach using a One-Group Pretest-Posttest Design. The sample consisted of seven students who were assessed through pre-test and post-test instruments. Data were analyzed using descriptive statistics and the Paired Sample t-Test with SPSS version 26. The findings revealed that the mean score increased from 20.00 in the pre-test to 37.14 in the post-test, indicating an improvement of 17.14 points. The Paired Sample t-Test produced a significance value of 0.000 (<0.05), demonstrating a statistically significant difference between students’ reading abilities before and after the intervention. The study concludes that novels are effective learning media for enhancing Arabic reading skills by increasing reading engagement, vocabulary acquisition, and comprehension of Arabic texts. The novelty of this research lies in the application of Arabic novels as contextual learning media in an Islamic boarding school environment, particularly for improving maharah al-qira'ah through a structured and measurable instructional approach
