Abstract: It is generally consented that the marginalisation of the indigenous communities of North Borneo in the economic transformation is a repercussion of the economic change under capitalism. This economic change was manifested by the changing orientation from subsistence to commercialism, the expansive penetration of money economy and the amelioration of internal development. The main objective here is to investigate the historical circumstances relating to the marginalisation of the indigenous economy in North Borneo in 1881-1941. The methodology employed is based on a historical interpretation derived from content analysis of views found in existing historical writings and selected archival documents. This research finding emphasises the importance of indigenous communities adapting to commercialism and a money economy in their economic affairs during the transition from self-sufficiency to commercialism. This led to the conclusion that the lack of such adaptation and late exposure to the money economy were the causes of the indigenous communities’ slow pace of economic progress under capitalism compared to the Chinese immigrant community. The contribution of this research includes the historical analysis that may be beneficial for policy makers to improve the economy of the existing indigenous communities.
