Copyright Notice
All writings published in this journal are the personal views of the authors and do not represent the views of this journal and the author's affiliated institutions. Author(s) retain copyrights under the license of Creative Commons Attribution-NonCommercial-ShareAlike (CC BY-NC-SA). CC BY-NC-SA license. It's one of the most commonly used Creative Commons licenses and allows others to freely use, remix, and build upon a work, but with certain conditions that ensure the creator's credit and restrict commercial uses.
1. BY: Attribution (Credit the creator)
-
What it means: Anyone who uses the work (whether they are remixing, adapting, or redistributing it) must give proper credit to the original creator. This typically means you need to include the creator’s name, the title of the work, and a link to the original source (if available).
-
Why it's important: This ensures that the original creator is always recognized for their work, even if it's being used in a new or modified form.
2. NC: NonCommercial (Only for noncommercial uses)
-
What it means: The work can be used, shared, or adapted, but only for noncommercial purposes. In other words, you can’t use the work (or adaptations of it) in any way that is primarily intended for or directed towards commercial advantage or monetary compensation.
-
Examples of noncommercial use: Educational purposes, personal projects, research, or use in nonprofit work.
-
What it excludes: Using the work in a for-profit business context, including selling copies of the work, using it in advertising, or incorporating it into a product or service that is sold.
3. SA: ShareAlike (Modified works must be shared under the same terms)
-
What it means: If you remix, adapt, or build upon the work, you must license your new creation under the same CC BY-NC-SA license. In other words, you can’t change the terms of the original license when sharing your adapted version.
-
Why it's important: This ensures that any derivative works (remixes, adaptations, etc.) remain freely available for others to use under the same noncommercial, attribution, and share-alike conditions. It creates a kind of "viral" effect, ensuring the freedoms granted by the original license extend to future generations of works.
How the License Works Together
This specific Creative Commons license allows people to:
-
Distribute: Share the work in any format, so long as it’s for noncommercial use.
-
Remix: Combine or transform the work, creating derivative works, but only for noncommercial purposes.
-
Adapt: Make changes to the original work—again, for noncommercial purposes—but you must release the adapted work under the same license.
In all cases, proper attribution must be given to the original creator, and any derivative works must also be shared with the same licensing terms (noncommercial and share-alike).
Example Scenario:
Imagine someone creates a beautiful photograph and releases it under a CC BY-NC-SA license. Another person finds the photograph and decides to create a poster using the image (a remix). This is allowed, but:
-
They must credit the original photographer (Attribution).
-
They cannot sell the poster for profit (NonCommercial).
-
They must apply the same CC BY-NC-SA license to the new poster, ensuring others can freely use, remix, or adapt it under the same conditions (ShareAlike).
What This License Doesn't Allow:
-
Commercial Use: You can't use the original work or any adapted version in a commercial context—such as selling it, using it in ads, or incorporating it into a paid product.
-
Different Terms: You cannot release any adaptations under a more restrictive license, or a commercial license. The modified work must always be under the same CC BY-NC-SA terms.
This type of license strikes a balance between giving others freedom to build upon and share works, while ensuring that the original creator receives credit and that commercial exploitation is restricted.
