Food Security Awareness Education through Animation Video to Enhance Students' Learning Outcomes in Biotechnology Lesson

Abstract

Tissue culture is a biotechnology topic in junior high school science education that is often perceived as complex and abstract, resulting in low student comprehension and a lack of understanding regarding its connection to food security issues. This study aims to develop an animated video that integrates the concepts of tissue culture and food security in a valid, practical, and potentially effective in enhance food security awareness and students' cognitive learning outcomes. The study used the Research and Development method with a modified 4D, limited to three stages: define, design, and develop. Media experts and content experts validated the product, then tested on 20 students using a one-group pretest-posttest design. Validation results indicated that the media was highly valid, scoring 100% from media experts and 95.14% from content experts. Student responses indicated that the media was highly practical, scoring 81.18%. Statistical analysis revealed a significant improvement in food security awareness (N-Gain = 0.37; Cohen’s d = 1.23) and cognitive learning outcomes (N-Gain = 0.77; Cohen’s d = 0.88), indicating the media’s influence on these two variables. This research contributes to the integration of food security education into biotechnology teaching through animation-based media.
