This study examines the representation of Horenso (報連相) as intercultural communication competence in the Japanese drama Kono Ki Atatamemasuka. A qualitative descriptive method with an interpretive approach was used to analyse workplace dialogues across 10 episodes, totalling 510 minutes. Data were collected through observation, note-taking, and dialogue transcription, then categorized according to the three components of Horenso: houkoku (reporting), renraku (communication), and Soudan (consultation). The analysis identified 64 instances: 14 of houkoku, 30 of renraku, and 20 of Soudan. These occurred in situations involving work progress reports, information sharing, product discussions, requests for guidance, work progress reports, information sharing, product discussions, requests for guidance, evaluations, and the presentation of considerations. The findings suggest that the portrayal of Horenso is associated with aspects of Japanese workplace communication, and adaptation to situational demands. The study suggests that Horenso, as portrayed in the drama, can represent aspects of intercultural communication competence, encompassing cultural knowledge, communication skills, contextual sensitivity, and adaptability.Downloads
